Last year while visiting Chicago with my niece for a college tour at my alma matter, I set a date to meet a high school friend I’d not seen in years. The hotel concierge suggested a restaurant in Lincoln Park, so we walked up the lake from the Gold Coast because it was a beautiful late summer evening.
Everyone was out, enjoying the weather. Heading into the restaurant, I passed a table of women, and saw with delight, another dear friend, in fact one of the coaches we’ve worked with here at Après for years: Rosie Guagliardo. It was pure coincidence, and for me, pure joy.
Rosie is one of those electric beings who radiates joy, and it makes sense, because that’s what she focuses much of her coaching practice on — the process of discovering where and how to put the best of you to work, all while and with the objective of, achieving joy.
Couldn’t we all use more joy in our lives right now? The good news is, even when things around us feel heavy, we can cultivate joy for ourselves… in jobs that may not inherently spark joy, or job searches that leave us feeling frustrated or depleted.

WHERE THE JOBS ARE
The latest jobs report capped a strong first quarter for U.S. job growth, with employers adding close to one million new hires in the first three months.
Education and health, government, leisure and hospitality, and retail continue to be the primary drivers of opportunities. Looking at these sectors through the lens of joy, they’re great areas for focusing your job search. Consider event planning or development in the educational arena, customer experience support in leisure and hospitality, perhaps user experience or project management at a wellness startup.
