Today I’m sharing the secret to a successful job search, a simple framework that once in place will help you save time and filter out distractions. If you’ve ever suddenly looked up after scrolling endlessly on a job board and discovered it turned from day to night, you know what I’m talking about.
This framework can also help you NOT lob your resume at jobs that don’t make sense for you, which frankly leads to confusion and depleted energy when you don’t hear back or are rejected.
Stop the madness, and get yourself organized with this formula, which is the secret to a successful job search and can be applied toward all career development:
What Drives You + Core Competencies = Effective Job Search
Why is this formula so effective? It forces you to do the upfront work of thinking inwardly about yourself, understanding what you need or want to do and why, and offers a structure to compare job descriptions against.
To identify what drives you, complete this coaching exercise.
To identify your core competencies, make a list of hard (i.e., technical) skills and soft (i.e., good listener) skills. These are also your transferable skills that you pack up and bring with you to every opportunity. Prioritize the ones that fill you and / or could be particularly valuable in today’s job market.
Once you’re clear on these — motivations and competencies — you can build the language, elevator pitch and supporting materials (resume, LinkedIn, portfolio) and begin pursuing that awesome step of what is next for you.
We’re hosting a workshop next Thursday, Sept. 21, where we’ll walk through How to Craft an Amazing Elevator Pitch — exactly what you’ll need for reaching out to your network and and writing cover letters. It’s free — we hope you’ll join us!
IT IS YOUR TURN! 👏
