I realize Father’s Day is around the corner, but I’m talking about mothers :) In particular, I’m highlighting an organization near and dear to me, the nonprofit Help a Mother Out (HAMO).
Since 2009, HAMO has distributed over 56 million diapers to families in need. Diapers are key to babies’ health and even access to some child care. They’re also just one component of many in a family’s overall monthly budget, and their prices are up over 10% since the start of the pandemic. It costs about $80-$100 per month per child in diapers.
For the poorest fifth of Americans, this is not trivial – eating up 14% of their income, according to the National Diaper Bank Network. While there is no government program that provides for diapers, some states have passed bills to exclude diapers from sales taxes to alleviate some of the cost burden.
HAMO steps in to remove the diaper hardship and allow families to spend their money on other necessities, like rent and child care, by providing access to free diapers. The program exists because two mothers saw the need and solved for it. Many years ago I interviewed HAMO co-founder, Lisa Truong, whose passion for this mission is still going strong.
We need more people like Lisa problem solving for today’s needs and challenges.
