Celebrating Career Comebacks!

Happy Birthday to Your Turn, the book we birthed four years ago in October of 2019. If I’d known what lied just ahead, we might have added a tagline to the title, Your Turn: Careers, Kids and Comebacks—A Working Mother’s Guide… for pandemics and beyond.
It’s the COMEBACKS part in our title that’s ringing so true for me right now.
At the time our book was published, women’s labor force participation rate was on an upswing, peaking in December 2019 at a higher rate than men. Just a few months later, pandemic pulled the rug out from under that trend, and women’s labor force participation rate plunged to 30-year lows. Today, despite that massive setback, the number of women ages 25-54 years old (prime age) in the workforce is again surging, recovering what was lost and rising above the 2019 peak. And while women with children between the ages of 13 and 18 make up the majority of this group (slightly above women with no children), it is women with children under the age of five pushing into / holding on to the workplace with charge.
There are a lot of factors that contribute to this overall picture, but a big one of course is hybrid / remote work. When we wrote Your Turn, flexibility was a lucky-if-you-can-get it kind of thing. We had employers that would flat out tell us they just didn’t work that way, and not work with us because we said it really mattered if they wanted to attract and retain women talent. Today, about one third of workers who can work from home do, up from 7 percent pre-pandemic.
We’ve come a long way, baby.
Comebacks come in all shapes and sizes. Yours might just be beginning. Now is your chance to be part of history, joining the ever growing number of women working hard to support themselves, their families, their communities, and contributing to a better — more flexible — workplace for everyone.
IT IS YOUR TURN! 👏
xo, Stacey
p.s. The women’s prime age labor force news is good but there’s still more work to be done, especially given high costs of child care and the end to government stimulus support for child care providers, which happened over the weekend.
